Victorian Miners

Location: Barnsley (Yorkshire) - Area of the Lundhill colliery

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: The ghosts of several miners killed in a disaster in the 1850s were reported when the surrounding pits were in operation during the twentieth century.

Black Dog

Location: Castleton (Derbyshire) - Odin Mine

Type: Myth

Info: This mine was believed to be haunted by a phantom hound, which may be connected to the invading Norse who named the mine (according to legend).

Kobolds

Location: Bodmin Moor (Cornwall) - Goonzion Down mine

Type: myth / Haunting Manifestation

Info: One tin mine shaft was nicknamed the Roaring Shaft after the many bangs and thuds heard emanating from the empty tunnel. Kobolds or Bucca were held accountable.

Oh Whistle

Location: Castleton (Derbyshire) - Blue John Mine

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info:  In the twentieth century they are ghostly whistling echoes around the chambers and tunnels - the sounds may be connected to the phantom man in grey who vanishes if approached.

Mauled Miner

Location: Rotherham (Yorkshire) - Silverwood Colliery

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This phantom miner was seen wearing old overalls carrying a lamp - his most distinct feature was the black space that filled the place where his facial features should have been.

Earthshaking Sounds

Location: Appletreewick - Low Hall

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: In Mid eighteenth century coming from deep underground, low unearthly groans would often knock ornaments from their stands. The cause of the disturbance was finally exorcised.

William Nevison

Location: Ardwick le Street - Hanging Wood

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: The woods were a popular place for Nevison, a highwayman, to lurk before riding out to commit his crimes. After he was hanged in York, his shade returned to the scene of better times.

Rector

Location: Aston - High Trees house, former rectory

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This fellow murdered his wife after he caught her having an affair with a manservant. He is doomed to walk the buildings walls, and the bloodstain that her body created can not be removed from the bedroom.

White Army

Location: Attercliffe - Near the river

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: In 1661 A local vicar, while sitting by the river, watched a line of white troops pass accompanied by white horses - he wrote that it took over an hour for the column to pass.

Murdered Man

Location: Attercliffe - Station Hotel

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This hotel is reputedly haunted by a man who was knifed to death back in the days when the building was actually three cottages.

Headless Highwayman

Location: Atwick - Roads in the area

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This decapitated spectral bandit remains lurking in the shadows of his old ambush area.

Grey Lady

Location: Auckley - Church

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This restless spirit was said to have made an appearance at many church events over a period of four hundred years, before she finally departed this plane of existence late in the nineteenth century.

Sally

Location: Barnsley - Barnsley District Hospital

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: Said to be built on the site of a poorhouse, the sounds of children wailing can be heard on the Infectious Diseases ward. A ghost nicknamed Sally haunts another area of the hospital and reportedly touches the side of anyone who enters the side room in which she died, while an area of offices is home to a friendly phantom old lady who sits in a rocking chair.

Woman and Child

Location: Bawtry - Crown Hotel

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: 2004 a manager at the hotel called in a ghost hunting group after a phantom woman was seen walking along the upper corridor, and a ghostly young child was reported sitting in the corner of the restaurant.

Gabriel Hounds

Location: Sheffield - Area around parish church

Type: Myth

Info: These hounds are said to have the faces of men, and have been heard passing the church on dark, still nights.

Former Maid

Location: Sheffield - Ashdell Grove house, Westbourne Road

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This building is reportedly haunted by a maid who committed suicide after her secret lover, a local policeman, left her. Her pacing has been heard down a corridor, and she also moves items around in the building's offices. The figure of a middle aged man has also been seen.

Pregnant Girl

Location: Sheffield - Ball Inn, Darnall

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This thin, grey ghost is said to be a member of staff who committed suicide at the inn when she discovered she was with child. She walks the upstairs corridors, while in other parts of the building, strange noises are heard in the night and well secured shelves fall down without warning.

Monk

Location: Sheffield - Beauchief Abbey and Hall

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This traditional white figure supposedly haunts the grounds of both the hall and the abbey. The latter location is also the home to a spectral monk.

Colonel John Bright

Location: Sheffield - Carbrook Hall public house

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: A close friend and ally of Cromwell, the well built ghost of Colonel Bright has been observed standing at the top of the stairs. Other ghosts reported here include the sounds of children, an elderly woman from the 1920s, a phantom Roundhead, a monk, and another shadowy figure who throws items around the bar.

Norah the Maid

Location: Sheffield - Firth Park Brushes (former school), Barnsley Road

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: The maid, who committed suicide on the site two hundred years ago, is still said to wander the area. When the high school stood on the area, cleaning staff reported lights that would turn themselves on, amongst other strange phenomena. A priest was called to exorcise the land in 2003; it is too early to say whether he was successful.

Life Saver

Location: Sheffield - Flat, School Street

Type: Poltergeist

Info: In 1981/82 a family that tolerated a poltergeist in their home for almost a year were eventually thankful for the entity - one night it banged so loudly the whole family awoke only to find their rooms full of smoke. They managed to escape as the fire engulfed their building.

Old Lady

Location: Sheffield - Middlewood Hospital

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: This old lady has been seen wandering around the former Ward Eight, where she disappears when she walks through a wall. There are also stories of disembodied footsteps running on the stairs.

Highwayman

Location: Sheffield - Mail Coach public house, 149 West Street

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: Wearing the clothing of a robber, this figure was seen lurking in the shadows prior to mysteriously disappearing.

Walk along the Boardwalk

Location: Sheffield - The Boardwalk, and the Point

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: Phantom footsteps have been heard moving along the corridor between the stage and the backstage dressing room, and mild poltergeist activity has been reported.

Cynthia

Location: Doncaster (Yorkshire) - Volunteer Inn, Frenchgate

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: Cynthia was the nickname given to this ghost by the landlord and his wife. They described the phantom woman as appearing so dainty and gentle that they grew attached to the spirit.

Soldier Inspecting

Location: Wath upon Dearne (Yorkshire) - Wath Wood Hospital

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: When this building was a general hospital, it was believed that a Roman Soldier would appear at night and inspect every new admission as they slept.

Grey Monk

Location: Conisborough - Conisborough Castle

Type: Haunting Manifestation

Info: Sightings of this spectral figure date back to the 1770s, when he was first seen drifting among the ruins. Reports also exist of sightings of a white woman, and the sounds of quiet voices and bumping.
